The upper river and its tributaries offer coarse and game fishing whilst the middle and lower reaches are noted for the coarse fishing with barbel on the River Nene and huge shoals of chub and silver fish on the both the Welland and Nene.

On the way to Merrit Island today we spotted a couple of anglers fishing off the Aquaduct (where the Welland River goes under the Welland Recreational Canal), and we stopped to talk to the anglers.

987654321 Posted August 30, 2017 Welland River is hit and miss for me. I usually can get a pike and/or bass or 2 trolling in my kayak. Lots of people catching walleye and other things on worms/worm harnesses. Cut bait will also likely do well in there. We went out for a couple hours the other night with lures and got skunked.
